Ok; that, and the fact that I just needed a break from feeling obligated to update this blog on a consistent basis. Truthfully, my desire to blog, shifts all the time. "For me, as a writer, I’m going to research whatever topic and subject I’m going to write about. As an artist, I’m going to travel and try to find that inspiration. That is what we’re lacking right now. Preparation. The industry is wanting the turnaround on music so quickly, because they believe when you turnaround the albums really quickly, people will buy them. For some newer artists it works. But for me its all about living so I can have something to write about. It took me a while to write this album. I usually draw from relationships, whether they be friends, boyfriend or whatever. For the first time in my writing career, I’ve been in a really happy, healthy relationship, and I have found the writing process has been a little difficult for me."

It's true that when artists are in a dark, sad, frustrating place, it's much easier to write songs because you're releasing your pain and suffering through your music, sort of like Mary J. Blige did back in the day. Sort of like many of the greats, actually. Solange said this album has taken a long time to write because she's been in a happy place for so long. Totally understandable, because it's hard to write about being sad and insecure and heartbroken when you're not in that place anymore. Needless to say, her new album will be out in 2012, and I for one, cannot wait. I love Solange!

If you love soul music and have never heard of Mayer Hawthorne, you are missing out on some solid music. I have such a soft spot in my heart for "blue-eyed soul." I've been a fan of Mayer since his debut album in 2009, and I've been eagerly anticipating a 2nd album. On October 11th, he released his sophomore effort titled "How Do You Do" and to be honest, I was skeptical of hearing it because I feared it wouldn't be as good as his first. I honestly thought he'd suffer from the "Sophomore Jinx," so I held off on listening to it - until now. I'm 5 songs in, and I LOVE it! I'm sure I'll wear this album out just as I did the first one.

Nia starred in one of my absolute all time favorite movies, Love Jones. I can watch this film on any given day, and fall in love with it every single time. The chemistry between Nina Mosley and Darius Lovehall was undeniable. The mood, the tone, the music, the love scene, the kisses (ooh, the kisses!), everything about this movie stirred up something in my soul. It was so simple, yet the message was loud and clear. At first, I was in denial about my sister dating Bu Thiam because they seem like such opposites (you like how I threw the word sister in there?), but after careful speculation, it may be true, or maybe they're just good friends. My friend Teana hipped me to this company called 12 Signs Wine, based out of California, that makes wine specific to your zodiac sign. They're the first brand to actually come up with the idea to pair astrology with wine. Unfortunately, they are only shipping within California due to "state specific alcohol laws." Maybe I can western union some money to Teana so she can send me my special zodiac flavor. :)

The wine ranges from around $32-35 a bottle, which I think is worth it just for the pretty bottle alone.

Purple has easily become one of my absolute favorite colors, and she is rockin' it flawlessly!

I have a very soft spot in my heart for musicians, simply because I connect with music on such a deep level, so I am always very saddened when I hear of a sudden passing of an artist that was so well loved, respected, and admired. Vesta Williams was a very significant force in r&b and soul music. She was best known for her song "Congratulations." She was found dead last night in her hotel room. The cause of death is currently unknown. Rest in peace Vesta, you beautiful soul.

I don't recall the exact moment I fell in love with interior design and decor, but I'm sure whenever it was, I was drinking a glass of wine. But that's neither here nor there.

I ran across these images on Decor Pad, and of course had to share them with you. I'm really looking forward to the day when I'll be able to have a space of my own to treat as my canvas and do whatever I want. Unique chandeliers, extra built-in shelves, a gorgeous shoe rack, wood flooring, accent walls, beautiful window treatments, the whole nine. Since I rent an apartment, I never like to get crazy, and yes, I could paint my walls a different color now, but the sucky part about apartments are that you have to paint them back white once you move out. I'll pass. lol

In the meantime, I'll just stay inspired and keep adding to my wishlist. Thinking of creating a vision board...

The bold red or orange lip is more popular than ever these days, and I for one, am not mad at all! Not everyone can pull off such bold colors. Not only do you have to find your perfect shade but you have to increase that confidence level by ten notches. These ladies have no trouble in that department. They all look gorgeous!

I'm a big fan of a more matte, stained red lip more than anything. When I wear red lips, I do not apply gloss over it.

Oprah Winfrey posted actress Kerry Washington's apartment on her website a couple years ago, and I remember seeing the photos and becoming so inspired and amazed at the transformation. It's pretty cool what a little paint can do to transform a room's look and feel. "Redoing my apartment had a much more profound effect on the way I live than I thought it would," says Kerry.

I agree! I think your home should be your oasis, your sanctuary. It should reflect your style and personality, and I feel people should put as much effort into personalizing their home as they do with their wardrobes.

She also says, "I've learned that it's a big deal to have a space that reflects who you are; it makes you feel more present and comfortable."

My sister in my head, actress Nia Long, attended a Pre Emmy Parenting Lounge party this past Friday in Los Angeles, looking extra adorable with all that pregnant belly. She makes being in her 40s while carrying a baby look flawless!

I'm curious to what some of her beauty tips are. I do remember her saying that she applies a dab of vitamin E oil under her eyes and on her lips before bed because it removes fine lines, dark circles, and adds moisture!

So, I decided to revamp my blog; not only the content of the blog, but the name as well. Originally, the blog was based on personal stories of what was going on in my life, but I decided that my personal life wasn't something I no longer wanted to share publicly. So those posts soon became obsolete, and recently, I became inspired to start posting again - but this time, about things that I love and are inspired by, like fashion, interior design, and music, among other things.

Once upon a time, I had a semi-popular blog called Fashionista at Play, and it was basically a collage of things that I found on the internet that I wanted to share, and put my own spin to. One day, I made the horrible mistake of deleting the blog, and unfortunately, I could not retrieve it. The blog was almost two years old, so you could imagine how much content I'd acquired over that time. Initially, I didn't have the energy to start another blog of that nature - until now. And so here I am again; Wine and Style. I hope that you guys enjoy the blog makeover, and don't forget to comment and follow me. :)

I refuse to believe that this small bungalow is only 500 sq ft. Amazing what these people do with such small space! I love how she utilized every little nook and cranny of this house. It has so much character. That's my goal for my living space. When you walk in my apartment, I want it to scream "this is Elle's house!!!"

I'm up early, listening to Wiz Khalifa. What a way to start a morning, right? What are your plans for NYE? I decided to stay in Columbus. I will be bringing in the new year at home alone, which for the most part, is kinda what I wanted to do anyway. My agenda is pretty simple today into the new year: clean up and do laundry, possibly order a carryout (my taste buds are yelling WINGS!), listen to music, drink, watch tv, maybe jot down some "things to do" for 2011, etc. I don't really make resolutions. I think people put too much emphasis on them, and 10 times out of 10, never follow through with that shit anyway. Everyday is a chance to change something about yourself or your situation, to progress, and work on being a better you. You don't really need to make a new year's resolution stating that. Just DO it. People talk a lot of smack. Talk is cheap. Don't say, DO. That's my motto. I live by it.

Totally off subject, but I really want this book holder...

The price is a little high (around $189), but damn if it doesn't look nice and neat. I'm all about nice and neat. Plus, since my apartment is small, it's a great way to display books without having to buy a bookcase that would possibly take up too much space. I am considering treating myself to this. I don't have that many books yet, but I've been adding some to my amazon wishlist that I'll start buying in the near future. Sold at Design Within Reach and CB2.

Long hair is slightly overrated, especially when it's not always manageable. My hair is the longest it's ever been, but I'm getting a little annoyed with it, and with that being said, it's chopping season once again. First, can I just say that Hayden Panettiere is my girl crush? She is so beautiful. And FLY! I love her. But I digress, let's talk about her amazing haircut for a second. I'm wanting the cut up top; the cute bob cut. The thing about my hair is that it grows back really fast, maily in the back, so I've never been scared to cut my hair. I've had short hair before. I'm just ready to get my "oomph" back, because I think I lost it somewhere between Arizona and Ohio. A haircut will truly revive my spirit and confidence. I plan on showing this photo to the lady who is going to cut my hair. Speaking of that, I'm gonna be brave and let a white person chop me up. I'm not worried about them not knowing how to cut because we all know the whites throw down with the scissors, but I'm hoping they will cut MY hair the way I want it. I have a good feeling about it, and usually my gut never lies to me. I'm gonna go for it.

If and when I ever decide to cut my hair back short again, this will totally be my signature style. I love this. So sexy and sophisticated. This girl can rock any length. Work it, Hayden. Work it.

I fell in love with another girl's home today on none other than Apartment Therapy. Just shy of 600 sq ft, and such simplistic decor. I love it soooo much.

LOVE everything about it. So small, but so freaking cute. I'm really looking forward to buying a cute desk someday. I would buy one sooner than later, but I can't think of where it would go right now.

So, I wanted to post about Ashley's lovely chic studio apartment the other day (photos are via my favorite site Apartment Therapy by the way), but I was held hostage at work, and when I got home, I was too sleepy to type. I just had to share this on my blog because it's not that often that something inspires me to this degree. I fucking love this girl's apartment! Every nook and cranny of it. I love it because it truly reflects her personal style and taste. You can tell that everything in her apartment has meaning to her, which is important when you're dealing with such a small space. Her apartment is only 500 square feet. Looks much bigger than that actually, but according to AT, it's really that small. I am just so impressed that she was able to decorate it so flawlessly with such little space. Such an inspiration. The other thing about her place that is really inspiring is that she said 95% of the things in her apartment are from thrift stores and flea markets. So not only does she have amazing personal style, but she knows how to bargain shop! I always say this; having true style has nothing to do with how much money you spend on something. I know a lot of people who own very expensive furniture and/or clothes, but don't possess true style. Ashley has it. She just has "it!"

I think my favorite room in her apartment is her closet. The chair, the vanity, the collection of shoes streaming across the top, everything. It's just so perfectly girly without being over the top or obnoxious. Kudos, seriously. KUDOS, girl.

When I initially created this blog, my intent was to document my new life in Ohio. I really haven't been doing that. But come to think of it, there hasn't been much to document, so now I don't feel so bad. I take everything I just said back. lol

My best friend drove down from Michigan a few weeks ago to hang with me, and we went to this delicious restaurant called Bistro Bon Vie, which is located about 10 minutes from my apartment. I'd been there two other times since living here, and since she requested seafood, I figured she'd enjoy their stuffed tilapia, and she did. It was pretty freakin good, as I kept sticking my fork in her plate. I enjoyed crabcakes, which are a favorite of mine - paired with roasted red potatoes. And no meal is complete without an alcoholic beverage. We tried their Flirtini, which was okay. Wasn't the most flavorful, but it definitely did the job of giving us a midday buzz.

By the way, this is a photo that I took of one of the pages out of the ELLEments of Personal Style book, that I purchased specifically because she was in it. I just love her. I really want one of these in my living space. I'm not sure where to start, what size/shape frames to buy (I'm thinking Ikea would be a good starting point), how to arrange the photos, etc. I'm sure that once the time comes for me to actually do it, I'll simply mimic one of the photos below, or get other ideas online.

I think a picture gallery wall adds so much sophistication to a room. I need to make a to do list. I have so many ideas swimming around in my head.

I'm sitting here on this lazy Sunday watching Rachel Zoe, when it hit me - I want a shoe rack! My idea is this - buy a shoe rack, and fill it up with all new pairs of shoes. Of course, this will take some time, but I think buying the shoe rack will inspire and motivate me to treat myself to a hot pair of heels or boots on a semi consistent basis. I'm really trying to rebuild my wardrobe because it needs a serious makeover. Shoes are important. Accessories are important. Everything else falls into place if you can master those two elements. When I get my new shoe rack, I already have a new pair of boots to display on it, and boy are they hot. In fact, they're so hot, I'd totally rock them with nothing else on. Just the boots. Naked. With my Blackberry. Now, the search begins to find a nice rack.

Ok so I really need to just tear up my credit cards. But I'm a girl in a new city who's just trying to decorate her new one bedroom apartment so she can feel at home, and sometimes the credit cards must be used. I am positive that the universe will provide a way for me to pay off my little debt as quickly as possible (lol). Luckily I'm a bargain shopper, so I never really spend too much on accent pieces.

So here's my bedroom so far. Please pay no mind to the white mattress pad. I still do not have bedding. Still deciding on colors. I'm thinking warm tones - burnt orange, chocolate, cream. I went back to Home Depot today and decided to purchase a nice simple beige shag rug for my room. I love rugs because they make the area look so cozy. I also purchased another lamp, which looks really cute. I moved the white rice paper lantern lamp back in the living room, where I feel it totally belongs. If these pillows look familiar it's because I simply moved the ones that were on the living room sofa onto the bed, just to get an idea of what a bright color would look like in the room. And as you can see, I turned the cute mod danish tables (priced at $35 for both from the thrift shop) into night stands. Once I get bedding, a nice modern danish dresser, and wall art, I will post more pics!

My 2007 - 2009 apartment

I was browsing through some old photos and came across pictures of the apartment that I moved into when I first arrived in Arizona in 2007. It was an extremely tiny apartment, maybe less than 600 sq feet, and the apartment building was really old (was built in the 60s), but the apartment had certain elements that I found charming - like the door that led to the patio in both the living room and bedroom, the shutters, the wood cabinets, and wood flooring in the dining room and kitchen. Although it was small and narrow, I really liked the kitchen. It had a very vintage feel to it - I guess because of those outdated ass appliances (lol). But unfortunately there were way more cons than pros with this place; like the old fashioned light blue bathroom counter top (ew), the fact that the only bathroom was inside of my bedroom, lots of dirty looking neighbors (I'm such a neighbor snob), and the laundry facility being way at the front of the complex near the leasing office, which meant I had to haul my laundry in my car and drive around. Pain in the ass. Not to mention the next door neighbors from Hell. This was probably the worst apartment experience I've ever had in regards to loud disrespectful neighbors. There were many 911 calls made when I stayed here. Needless to say, I was so glad when my lease was up. Nice to see these photos again though.

As you can tell, I love changing my furniture and decor pieces often. Change is refreshing, especially when it comes to home decor! The sectional sofa in these photos is the one piece of furniture that I actually kept for a very long time. I'd had it since 1997, and finally decided to sell it on Craigslist in 2009. 12 years! That was a record for me. It was high time for a change.

Earlier this afternoon, I was bored and wanted to get out of the house for a little while, so I decided to take a quick trip to Eclectiques in downtown Columbus to look around, and ended up picking up a cute vintage mid century footstool ($29) - which is going to serve as a mini bench for the bed, and also this cute little table. Actually they came in a pair. I couldn't leave them in the store. They were just begging to be taken home. Hopefully my bedroom will look very cozy when everything is where it needs to be.

The moment has arrived - the sequel to the Sex and The City the movie! I am so excited. 3 of my girlfriends are driving down from Michigan tomorrow and spending the weekend with me so we can check it out together! I keep hearing mixed reviews on the film. I don't pay attention to reviews/opinions, etc. You have to check things out on your own. Some said it was much better than the first, some said it was terrible...terrible? I don't even think that is possible. There have been a lot of strong opinions about it. Some people feel that they should have stopped at the series and never made the movies at all. But I disagree. The show is genius, and the first movie was just as great. I can't even control the excitement. I hope the movie doesn't sell out before we get our tickets. Eek!

...and I loved it! It was a cluttered, beautiful tri level masterpiece. That Bustown Modern website was a bit intimidating because I assumed everything would be priced way too high in the store, but Eclectiques isn't their personal store. I think they only sell some of their pieces there. Matter of fact, there are several dealers who sell their items there, I found out when I was talking with the lady in the store. Needless to say, that was a fun 30 minutes I spent scoping out so many cool items. I was in mid century Heaven. And the prices weren't bad at all. They had the cutest set of mod danish end tables, $40 bucks each. They had a mod danish chair that was really adorable, for only $45! They had coffee tables, chests, dressers, ottomans, all of it mid century. *le sigh* I can't wait to go back and take my time looking. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I closed the spot down. lol I'm so happy I found that place! And right across the street from it is another antique shop, The Boomerang Room. I may take a trip Sunday afternoon and browse some more. They had clothes, jewelry, wall decor and paintings, vintage magazines, everything under the sun. Unique. Inspiring. And I am even more certain now that I will not buy anymore big pieces of furniture unless my heart calls for it, and right now, my heart calls for mid century modern danish, dammit.

So, after more stalking of the net in hopes of finding shops in Columbus that sold modern danish furniture, I came across a really cool spot called Eclectiques. They also have an online store called Bustown Modern. ColumBUS, get it? They have some REALLY nice pieces, but they just may be out of my price range. However, I'd still like to go in the store and actually check it out. But what I really need is to get lucky and find a thrift store that'll have what I'm looking for in the $45-55 dollar price range. I'll even pay $100. They're out there. I've seen proof. I just need to find these places.

I was reading a house tour post on Apartment Therapy and the young lady's advice on decorating your home was so accurate: "Go slow. If you rush into purchases you will regret them, and if you furnish your whole space in one or two shopping trips it will lack character. Your home can be a great way to express your creativity, so take the time to make it reflect who you are. Don’t just go out and buy stuff because it matches."

I couldn't have said it better myself. In the past I've been guilty of sometimes rushing to buy things for my apartment just because they matched. She's right, your place will definitely lack character. As time goes on, I am learning that. Maybe I should stop being so impatient about getting my place complete so quickly. I wanna make sure I'm buying things that I truly love.

Speaking of character..

I really like these tripod floor lamps. I definitely have to buy another lamp for the apartment. I ended up moving my lantern lamp back into my bedroom (so indecisive), and now I'm trying to decide what kind of lamp I would like in the front room. These look so cool!

I've decided that my next semi major project to tackle in my new apartment is going to be the organization of my closet. Right now, it looks a freaking mess and it's really driving me crazy. Mismatched hangers including the God awful wire hangers *cringe*
I HATE wire hangers (emphasis on 'hate'). It's so ugly and unorganized, and since I don't have a dresser yet, some of my clothes are still in bags (oh my God, I can't take it). I'd actually like to see the bottom of my closet. So that will be my next concentration, along with the bedroom itself. I think I have settled upon wooden hangers, since they look so lovely, and since everything else in my apartment is wood. Even if I move out of that particular apartment in the future (which I'm sure I will), these wooden hangers are still heavenly. Ikea has an 8pk set of natural wood hangers for 3.99, and for the antiqued stained hangers (which are a darker wood) are $4.49. The thing is, there is no Ikea here! Can you believe it? Columbus has every other freakin' store under the sun, so I was really surprised that the closest Ikea is two hours away. *sad face* And I can't order them online because they're not available online. But wait, look what I just found! 30 pack for $27.99. I'd need 2 or 3 packs though. Or these. You know what I NEEED to do? Have a damn housewarming party. But I think that would be hard to pull off since I'm 3 hours from everyone. I don't know. I need EVERYTHING. Starting over isn't as fun and adventurous as people make it out to be. It's really hard, especially when your funds are limited. But I'll get them. They're a must. Because I need for my closet to eventually look neat and cute like this...

I also have to make room for the shoes and stuff that I left in Phoenix, that has yet to be delivered to me. 90% of my shoes are still there. Hey, there was no more room in the car. This closet isn't as big as my old one, so I'll have to really get creative and fit everything in. Luckily, I don't have as much junk anymore because I gave a lot of old stuff to Goodwill. This should be fun.

Pre Columbus

I really liked my Eggplant furniture that I had when I lived in Arizona. But, it was a hard color to accessorize, and the sofa was so fly that I honestly didn't like people to sit on it, which is why I decided to sell it to focus on a more subtle living room set, with a more "homey" looking sofa - one that I could feel comfortable taking naps and chilling on. Another Craigslist find - that sofa - $200. The lady owned it for a year and barely used it. I fell so hard for that sofa when I saw it in person that I had to have it, then was able to find out where she'd purchased it so I could buy matching chairs. I'll miss this look. It was very stylish and contemporary.

I only owned this set for a year. My friend K thinks that I'm going to end up selling my new Sage sofa set within a year as well. I don't really see that happening. The thing is, I do like change, especially when it comes to the decor of my apartment. Just because you purchase something brand new doesn't mean you're stuck with it for a certain amount of time before you are allowed to want something else. If you're ready for a change, sell it! Sell it, and buy something new. It's really that simple. That's the joy of having options. I change my mind a LOT when it comes to my apartment's decor, which is why I wanted to go for a more toned down color sofa. Bye bye Eggplant; hello Sage.

Above is the before picture that I took last Saturday when I first got my sofa (wow, that seems much longer than a week ago).

Since then, I've purchased a couple more things for the living room, like my adorable rice paper lantern floor lamp (Target, $25), the burnt orange suede pillows (TJ Maxx, $7.99 ea), and a gorgeous area rug from Home Depot that hasn't been delivered yet. Also, my chaise was delivered yesterday. Here are the updated photos of my living area..

The flowers came from Michael's, and the vase was something I picked up at a consignment store when I lived in Phoenix. Aside from my sofa and chaise, I don't plan on spending a lot of money to decorate my apartment, for the simple fact - I ain't got none! This sista right here is on a serious budget. That's why I want to choose my items carefully. I'm such an impulsive buyer, and have always been that way, but I'm trying to take a different approach. I want to make sure my apartment is exactly the way I want it.

As I said before, the living room isn't complete. I'm praying that I can find a modern danish credenza for the opposite wall to place my tv on, a mod danish end table, as well as wall art (I'm actually thinking shelves above the sofa, like this), and a couple more multi-colored pillows for the chaise and sofa. Slow progression (at least for MY taste lol), but it's coming.

...mid century modern danish furniture! It's a must that I snag a piece for my apartment. Any piece. I really don't care what it is. My first preference would be a credenza (like the one right above) to place my television and other knick knacks on. I LOVE the look of this furniture (I had to emphasize the word 'love' so that you would know how serious I was). Very vintage, very 50s and 60s. I get so excited every time I find a piece online. I've always liked this style of furniture but never knew the exact name for it. Now I know. And now I shall stalk the living hell out of Craigslist to find me a credenza. That's further proof that I HAVE TO HAVE one of these in the living room of my apartment. I'm on a mission, kids!

PS. My chaise sofa came today, and it's so super cute. It's huge too. Looks like a little bed in my living room. I placed it near the window, which I feel is a perfect spot to have a chaise. I'm in it right now, and it's such a comfy chill out spot.

I went into Home Depot yesterday to purchase some lightbulbs for a rice paper lantern lamp I have, and ended up buying this gorgeous rug as well. I'm still trying to figure out how this happened. I had no intention on buying anything but $3 light bulbs! But I could NOT resist. I was planning on buying a larger rug for my living room at a later time, but when I saw this, I was instantly drawn in. The photo does it no justice. The assembly from hell

Well, maybe not from Hell. I mean, it could have been much worse. I'm referring to my new platform bed that took me 5 hours to assemble last night. And the only reason it took so long was because when I got near the end, I realized that 4 of the parts that I'd already assembled were upside down, so I had to disassemble half the bed and redo it. I didn't care how long it took, I was determined to have that bed completed before I even thought about sleeping, which is why I didn't go to bed until 1:30am, waaay past my bedtime. Needless to say, I'm tired as shit this morning. Delirious almost.

I found the photo above by browsing google images, and I love the colors they used on the bed. So serene, so clean. My bed is similiar looking, in the fact that it doesn't have a headboard. It's a simple Mocha colored platform bed. I'm officially excited to decorate my bedroom now that I've gotten the main piece out the way. It was hell not having a bed. I feel so humble right now (lol).

I don't have bedding yet. Still deciding on colors.

The bed came from my favorite store (Craigslist), and it was brand new, in the box. Craigslist deserves an award of some sort. I love that site.

My flatscreen tv is small like the one in the photo (20"), and with the extra space I can add little knick knacks and such. Genius plan. Now the hard part, finding the perfect piece.

When it comes to decorating an apartment, or putting together an outfit, I'm told that I'm pretty good at it. I personally don't think I'm as creative as people hype me up to be (lol), but I receive those types of compliments in the most humbling way possible. A lot of times, especially with decor, I have a hard time bringing to life the image that I am envisioning in my mind. Like, I know how I want my new place to look, but it's really difficult to translate it. It's so funny - my friends constantly call or email me to help them pick out an outfit, or help them think of new accent pieces to add to their rooms, and sometimes that is hard to do because all of my friends taste differ from mine. I know what I like, but it's hard for me to try and give suggestions to others. A picky friend saw pics of my bathroom and said that if she gave me the money, could I purchase some bathroom decor for her. I told said picky friend to at least give me some colors to work with. I'd hate to do it all on my own, and she turns up her nose at it. That's grounds for friendship termination (lol). So as of right now, I'm waiting on her color choices. We'll see just how serious she is.

Anyway, I want my apartment to look very unstructured. Neat, but unstructured. And by that, I mean, I don't want it to look like a furniture store advertisement. I want to buy pieces from different sources - unique pieces, second hand pieces. Not overly matchy matchy. I'm currently looking for a coffee table on Craigslist. Can we talk about Craigslist for a second? I love browsing that damn site. If you're lucky you can find some truly great things for your place, and for dirt cheap. It's ideal for people on a budget like me, or for people who just can't drop hundreds of dollars down at once to furnish their place. It's also ideal for people who like to switch up their decor a lot *raises hand* It would suck to spend a lot of money on something, then 6 months later, you're tired of looking at it.

I am trying to avoid the uniformed look as best as I can. I want a variety of color in my apartment. The primary color for my kitchen is Red. It just sorta happened that way. I plopped a red round rug in there that I'd bought from Ikea last year, and started working around that. So the kitchen color ended up being Red by default, but I actually really like it. Looks nice with the wood flooring and cabinets. My living area will consist of Sage, Burnt Orange, and Chocolate - with an emphasis on Orange (I think). I want a unique coffee table, preferably dark wood. The jury is still out on the bedroom. I'm not quite sure what look I want yet. I still am drooling over the platform style beds.

I want my place to have a quirky eclectic feel to it, but I want it to make sense. If I can pull it off, great. If not, it'll still have my special touch, and it'll still be cozy and inviting. That is always the goal. Every apartment that I've had was always described as "cozy, warm, and inviting." I'm trying to keep that going. I'm actually going to check out a dark brown antique coffee table after work that is listed on Craigslist, and if I like it, it's coming home with me, providing it can fit in my car, and providing Mr Man calls me back before I leave work. Craigslist is a gem, really. Nevermind the personal ads and all the other freaky crap that goes on there. I stay in the furniture section and mind my business. :-)

The loveliness that is High Street

This past Friday I had a chance to drive downtown and get my sight seeing on. Although my job is located downtown, I haven't had the chance of exploring what Columbus has to offer. I think by the expressway being so close to my job, and that's the first thing I see when I drive out of the parking garage, I don't think of anything else but jumping into the crazy flow of traffic and getting home. But Friday, I felt compelled to turn my car the opposite way, get lost for a little while, and explore my new city's downtown district. One word - LOVE! There are a gang (and I DO mean a gang) of bars, sushi spots, cool apartments, and other restaurants. High Street/Short North/Arena District area is the place to be. It seems to be the happening spot. I was in total awe as I drove slowly through traffic, trying to remember all the names of the places that I'd like to patronize when I got a chance to.

It's kinda hard to sight see when you're the one driving, but I made the best of it without crashing my car or looking like a damn tourist. It was a beautiful day as well - 84 degrees, so there were tons and tons of people out and about, having drinks and food on the patios of the establishments, winding down and bringing in the weekend just right. Very hip, very trendy atmosphere. I absolutely adored it. I am really looking forward to hanging out down there. I think I'll wait for my friends to join me. Hopefully they'll be visiting soon.

When stressed, drink wine.

You know what I just realized? Wine makes it all better. Like, you know how comedians joke about people being stressed and how, if they just took one puff of the marijuana, they wouldn't care shit about what's going on around them? That's what wine does to me...which is why it's so important that I always have a bottle in my apartment at all times. Yeah. I'm serious. I'm sitting here drinking a glass of Glen Ellen's Proprietor's Reserve Pinot Grigio 2009, and I feel super chill. Not really stressing about anything on this rainy Sunday (just wait til I'm completely sober - different story), blogging, and listening to some mellow music (I believe Eric Roberson is playing right now). I'm just taking it all in, counting my blessings, and thanking God for allowing me to be closer to my family and friends again. Life is good, no matter HOW much I bitch and complain. And yes, I do it often, and I am not ashamed to say I do. But at the end of the day, I know that I am blessed. There are people far worse off. I need not ever forget that.

I've been doing nothing but fantasizing and daydreaming about decorating my apartment. Like, that's really the only thing that's important to me right now - getting my "home" in order. I won't be myself until things are exactly the way I want them. Blame the Aries in me. I'm neurotic, and anal, and impatient, and that'll never change. But, I know that my situation is going to require lots and lots of patience, of which I do not possess. This a major test. I see you God. I see you.

Saturday afternoon at around 2:30pm, I pulled into the parking lot of my new apartment complex. Prior to that, I was in a 4 door Honda Accord Sedan for two days, probably the longest two days of my life, on a cross country drive. If I never sit behind the wheel of a car again, it'll be too soon. I will admit, the road trip was seamless. Translation - not once did we get lost. People talk a lot of crap about Mapquest, but they've never steered me wrong. Those directions were extremely precise.

I planned on making this super long blog about my cross country adventure, but I honestly don't have the mental energy to break it down. I'm still overwhelmed and a tad stressed (ok VERY stressed) about everything, so I'm just trying to absorb it all. People have been texting me and asking, "sooo how do you like Ohio?" In all honesty, I can't answer that right now. It's too soon. So, if you're reading this, and you haven't asked me that yet, do me a favor and DON'T. The answer is I don't know. It's really too soon to tell if I like it here or not. One thing I don't like are the aggressive drivers. And so far, it's been raining nonstop, and I totally hate driving in the rain. It's just not my thing. I get really nervous, especially at night, on the highways. And on top of all that, I am not familiar with the roads. So yeah. You can imagine my damn anxiety right now.

5808 (my address) won't feel like home until I get furniture. So, right now it just feels like I'm in somebody else's apartment, house sitting or something. Doesn't quite feel like mine. I like to decorate, light candles, things of that nature, and all those things are gonna take time. Starting over takes time, especially with limited funds.

On a good note, my old boss gave me an Amex gift card, so I decided to at least make my bathroom pretty, since that's the easiest room in the house to decorate, and probably the most fun.

I went with an Asian theme - by mistake. Totally wasn't planned, but when K looked at the decor, she decided that it "looks really Asian." I sent the BB pics to another friend who said the same thing - that it had an oriental feel. I can dig it.

I'm still not finished decorating it since I haven't any wall decor yet, but here's what I have so far...

I hope to find some Asian inspired wall art. I WILL say that I love the bathroom. It's huge. And that's a good thing since the last apartment I stayed in had a massive bathroom as well. I'd gotten used to all the space.

I hear noises.
I get up to look around my 872 sq ft apartment, and suddenly remember that I have my bathroom rugs in the washer, and that the WASHER was actually the noise I was hearing. Duh. I'm so paranoid. But I'm sure I'm not the only one that lives alone who "hears" things every now and then. At night, I always fear that when I open my eyes in the middle of the night, someone's gonna be standing in the doorway of my bedroom staring at me (lol). I freak my own damn self out. I should stop thinking such things. Damn washer. Got me all shook up.

I am getting a little excited about my road trip this Thursday. Right now, it's all about finalizing everything, spending money you don't have to get your car insurance transferred, required deposits for your new electric service (sucks), among other things that I need to still handle here in AZ. I'm honestly just ready for this ordeal to be over. If I never move again, it'll be too soon. I'm just ready to be settled. I hate living in clutter, and right now, my apartment looks like Hell's Half Acre. Shit everywhere. Ugh.

Hell's Half Acre. Got that from my mother. Not sure where she comes up with these crazy little sayings of hers. I love 'em though.

So I've been thinking of what kind of music we'll play on our road trip. Of course, I want upbeat music for the most part. K's kinda reserved (not really, but kinda). Reserved in the sense that she probably would be opposed to blasting 50 Cent. Or Raekwon. Or J Dilla or something. I might can slip in a little Jay Z. ALL the "older" folks love Jay Z. If she ever read that I referred to her as old, she'd probably try to strangle me.

I've been dreaming of platform beds lately. I think I want one. But, I'm still on the fence about it. But aren't they just so freakin' dope? Seriously, it's all I've been drooling over in my mind. They're so simple yet so stylish, and the right bedding would make the look complete. Does the cat come with the set? Because I'd take him too.

The other day, I read on Apartment Therapy about a lady who decorated her 280 sq ft (no, that's not a typo) studio apartment, and it really inspired me because she talked about how all she had at the time she moved were her clothes and personal items, and in addition to that, her budget was limited. She said that she purchased the basic furniture pieces, all in neutral colors and each month, she'd buy something new for her apartment, and it eventually became this perfect cozy and adorable little living space. Reading the post sorta reminded me of my current situation, and how when I move to Columbus, I will only have my clothes and personal items with me as well. I'm literally starting over. The thought is kinda scary, but refreshing at the same time.

Long story short, I SO love how she decorated such a small place! The thing is, you don't really need a lot of money (or space clearly) to make your home look nice. You just need good taste, and live in driving distance to stores like TJ Maxx, Ikea, Pier 1, and Marshall's. :p

I'm so ready to decorate! However, I know that I will have to practice a little bit of patience because when I get into my new apartment, I won't be able to buy everything I want right away. That's gonna be a hard pill to swallow because I'm the type of person who wants what she wants when she wants it. I'm going to try and focus on one room at a time (yet another difficult task). The bedroom will be first priority. I guess it is most important that I have a bed to sleep in than anything else. :)

Working here in Arizona, I've become acquainted with some pretty cool people, people from all walks of life, and all over the world. Not only is AZ one big melting pot in itself, but so is my place of employment. Out of all the people here, I think I'm gonna miss these two gals the most. They both work in the Accounting department with me, and when they're not at work, my day's pretty dull and boring. V (the professional drink sipper) is the joker, happy go lucky, always smiling and giggling, always doing or saying something silly. She's my adorable goofy Thai friend, the social butterfly with the most beautiful head of hair I'd ever seen on a person. Beautiful straight thick hair. I always joke with her, "you know black people be paying a lot of money to have the kind of hair you NATURALLY grow!"

Then there's G (on the right). She's the more reserved one. She's a caring sensitive soul who doesn't have any children and never wants any. Loves Hennessey on the rocks. Hates nosy people. I love making her laugh. I think she gets a kick out of me. She's the co-worker who, when I'm stressed due to whatever, and breaks out in tears at my desk, is the first one to grab the box of Kleenex, bring it over to my desk, and rub my back. So comforting. I love people like that. Certain characteristics she possesses reminds me of myself. She also cries when she's angry or stressed, no matter when or where. I've rubbed her back many a day too. I made a vow to always keep in touch with these two whenever I decided to leave Phoenix, and I plan to. My asian babies!

Food Heaven Being really greedy right now

I promise not to turn this into a food obsessed type of blog, but you just have no idea how excited I am to be finding all these great restaurants near my future new apartment! And posting about all these places are solely for my personal reference, unless you all plan on coming to visit (lol).
One thing that I didn't have too much luck with living out here on the west coast was finding a good Chinese restaurant. I ended up finding ONE place that had good rice, but all of their other stuff was average at best. And don't even think about ordering egg foo young out this way - awful. Every place that I tried had the worst patties I'd ever tasted. And I'm such a lover of egg foo young, so it was very disappointing to say the least. Now, the midwest is a completely different story. There's a good chinese joint on every other corner - with bomb egg foo young. So, I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope that Lucky Yee doesn't let me down. And to add icing on the cake, this place is not even 5 minutes from my apartment. I think I'll try them out the day K and I reach Ohio. I shall report back. lol

I dream of food...

To know me is to know that I love food. I love to savor it as I'm eating it, appreciating every single bite. I like to take my time because #1 - you can truly enjoy your meal, and #2 - eating too fast causes heartburn and also causes you to feel fat and disgusting afterwards. Just a personal opinion though.

Relocating to another state is so much more than just packing up your life, hopping in your car, and not stopping until you reach your final destination. You have to really do research; research on very important things like finding the perfect Thai restaurant (Nida's Thai on High). Mmm! Or a good place to have brunch and a mimosa, or seeking out a new hairstylist (this is probably the hardest thing to find when moving to a new city). There are so many things that are important to me when I move to a new area. I need to live close to a great mall or shopping center. And a good grocery store. And a wine bar. And a jazz lounge. And TJ Maxx. And Homegoods. I'm squealing in my seat as I type this.

I feel like I know Columbus already because I've been all over the internet the past two weeks, googling everything I can think of. I'm really anal, and I like to know what I'm stepping into before I step into it, even the things the average person wouldn't consider important. I came across a few food blogs that list great places to eat in and around the Columbus area. I like hers, and his too. She actually took the photo above at Nida's. I'm drooling just thinking of all the great restaurants I will discover once I move there, and since Columbus isn't as big and spread out as Phoenix, I think I'll be less hesitant to explore the city. Plus, it will feel more like home since I'll be a midwest gal again.
